Landscaping a steep slope presents unique challenges. When the terrain is so severe that accessing it safely is difficult, traditional gardening or lawn care is not a practical option. Instead, the solution lies in planting low-maintenance, erosion-controlling vegetation that can thrive without frequent upkeep.

The goal on a steep slope is twofold: reduce erosion and create a visually appealing landscape that does not require ongoing care. Deep-rooted groundcovers are an ideal choice, as their roots stabilize the soil and their foliage provides coverage to protect against runoff. Some of the best plant options include creeping juniper, which spreads widely with minimal effort; lantana, a drought-tolerant flowering plant; and Kurapia.

Succulents also do well on sun-drenched slopes. Varieties such as ice plant or sedum offer texture, color, and water efficiency. These plants require very little pruning and will hold their own in challenging conditions. In shady areas, try using vinca minor or ivy which spread quickly and suppress weeds.

We typically recommend planting hardy trees to help anchor the blanket of groundcover. In addition, a variety of easy-care and large-spreading shrubs will contribute the ideal mix of visual interest and sustainability to your landscaping on a slope.

Mulching between plants is another helpful strategy. A layer of bark mulch or decorative rock can help retain moisture and further reduce the need for maintenance. Avoid tumbled/round gravel that can easily wash downhill unless properly contained with edging or terraces.

When landscaping extreme slopes, it’s often best to minimize foot traffic entirely. Instead of attempting to maintain a garden in these areas, think of them as natural zones that need to be stabilized and visually softened. Drip irrigation systems, installed at the top of the slope, can ensure plants receive consistent water without requiring you to walk on unsafe ground.
