Mulch does more than make your garden look beautiful. It helps retain soil moisture, reduce weeds, and protect your plant roots from heat. But with so many mulch options available, how do you choose the right one for your landscape design?
When recommending materials for our landscaping projects, we often lean toward dark chocolate shredded bark mulch. The deep, rich color enhances greenery, complements stonework, and provides a polished finish to your outdoor spaces. This mulch is dyed to maintain its color for about two years and often lasts up to three. Unlike untreated branch mulch, it does not fade to a dull grey.
If you want something a little different, you can also choose this shredded bark in gold, which creates a bright and cheerful contrast, or red, for a dramatic and eye-catching effect. Black is another bold option that gives your garden a sleek and modern look, perfect if you like a more gothic or contemporary aesthetic.
What about rock?
Some homeowners consider using rock instead of mulch. While it does not need replacing as often, rock can trap heat, which means you will need to select heat-tolerant plants to prevent stress or damage. So, we would only use rocks in consideration with your overall landscape design plans.
Are there other options?
You might have heard about other options available on the market, like rubber mulch, gorilla hair mulch, and cocoa mulch. But there are some serious drawbacks to these products. We do not recommend rubber mulch, as it can emit an unpleasant odor and contains chemicals that may be harmful over time. Gorilla hair mulch can also be frustrating since it sticks to clothes and blows around easily. Cocoa mulch is another option we avoid, as it can be toxic to pets.
